Ex-IAS officer's son arrested for brick attack on woman in Kanpur

A 38-year-old man, Devashish Nigam, was arrested in Kanpur’s Bithoor for brutally attacking an IIT Kanpur employee with a brick after she turned down his marriage proposal. The accused dragged the widowed victim out of a car and struck her repeatedly, causing severe head injuries. Alert locals rescued the woman, thrashed the attacker—who claimed his mother is a retired IAS officer—and handed him over to the police.

Police in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, have rescued a 13-year-old minor and arrested 12 suspects, including an e-rickshaw driver and hotel operators. The victim was allegedly kidnapped on June 18, 2026, and sold to a hotel owner. She was held captive across four local hotels and repeatedly assaulted by over 30 men over five days. Authorities have also demolished four illegal hotels linked to the crime.
